The dedication of Pharmacists Mutual Companies to the pharmacy profession is apparent the moment you set foot in the door of the company’s home office in Algona, Iowa. A unique turn-of-the-century museum furnished with pharmacy artifacts, many donated by policyholders, greets guests and pharmacy enthusiasts.
The reconstructed pharmacy, opened to the public in 1972, was patterned after a drug store from the early 1900’s. Among objects and sundries are glass-labeled shelf bottles, proprietary remedies, scales, perfumes, baby supplies, as well as various tools of the apothecary.
This exhibit dramatizes the fact that Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company was organized and established by pharmacists and is still maintained exclusively by and for pharmacists and other associated businesses and professionals.
The pharmacy museum is open to the public at no charge. Hours are Monday through Friday 8-5 CST or by appointment by calling 515.295.2461.
